Diesel conversions 14380 and 14379

Diesel conversions 14380 on left, 14379 on right. Photo May 1984 [Harold Clark Collection]

Correction: The engines shown are 15348 (left) and 15349 (right), ‘Delilah’ and ‘Samson’ and not 14379/14380 as stated.

An eagle-eyed correspondent advises that while the registration number plate NK 1755 is off ‘Sally’- engine number 14380 – this photo is of 15348/9! He also adds that the dead giveaway for telling the engines apart is that the engines in the photo have a square fuel tank set forward on the running board as opposed to 14379/14380 which still have the original round fuel tanks, rear of the donkey engine. Another interesting point he makes is that these conversions need the wider 16” front wheels as there is more weight to the fore than when they were steam. Thanks for the correction.
